Four generous or six healthier portions. ======= INGREDIENTS ======= Apples, etc. 500 g Sugar 1 tablespoon - sprinkle on top ======= The Crumble ======= Plain flour 150 g Butter, cold 100 g Sugar 100 g Oates 2 tablespoons Salt 0.5 teaspoons You can substitute exotic sugars for interest. Rub the cold butter and other dry ingredients into a lumpy sandy texture. Don't mix too thoroughly. The lumps bake into the best crunchy bits. Put the fruit layer at the bottom. Pile the lumpy sand on top. An uneven coating makes a better crumble. The apples can be substituted with any seasonal fruit. Some dried fruit goes well in the fruit layer. Add a little water to rehydrate dried fruit. Optionally dot the crumble with fruits such as blackberries. Sprinkle the top with sugar. Bake in a medium oven for about 30 minutes or until the crumble darkens and caramelises. This is excellent hot or cold.
